Holyrood Marine Base Phase IIB
The Launch at Marine Institute is a modern training and educational facility recently constructed in Holyrood, NL. This 45,000 ft2 building consists of numerous workshops, classrooms, technical labs, office space, a two-storey atrium, and cafeteria. This building is situated just 50 ft from the ocean’s edge and seamlessly integrates with the new pier and quay operations.
The Launch was constructed using a hybrid steel/concrete structure consisting of three concrete cores (stair 1 & 2, elevator), and steel superstructure. Given the soil conditions and proximity to the ocean, over 40 steel piles were driven into the bedrock, followed by concrete pile caps. The facility was designed to be highly energy efficient, as there was a large geothermal field installed for the ground source hydronic heating/cooling equipment, robust building envelope, and solar energy infrastructure.
